I just opened up TOS and was looking at some trades that I was
thinking of placing for my minor's account and was surprised by the
"new regulations" that TOS has rolled out.
Remember Children can not have margin accounts so this is treated like
an IRA.... and BTW I have been reading the POSTs about this I was just
surprised that I was affected by it as well.

Here is an Example:

Vertical BUY +10 IBM AUG 10 115 PUT
SELL -10 IBM AUG 10 110 PUT
OLD BP EFFECT $80.00
NEW BP EFFECT $110,050.00

THIS IS A DEBT SPREAD!!!!!! and forget about a spread using calls...
it is not allowed.

I am not sure what I am going to do... move brokers, organize as a
business... any thoughts?

Thanks,

Joey

[ConservativeOptionStrategies] Re: TM spread

I like this trade, Anthony. How do you handle these calendars? Do you pre-determine your profit and exit, or do you try to ride it up to expiration of the short option? Also, 49 days to expiration of the Sep contract seems like a long time. How does the length of this trade compare to your successful FSLR trade, which I assume was also a time spread?

[TheOptionClub.com] Re: XLE Aug-Sep Gorilla Calendar

Update: XLE closed at 53.85 and the fly is still in the middle of the web. TOS says I am up 10% on this trade in 3 days, displaying a profit calculation of $146 on my $1,360 cost. We all know that this number is off. My excel calculations, which take into account commissions in and out as well as nat prices (not midprices as used in TOS), show a current loss of -$61.00 if I take the trade off now. So it's somewhere in between, and I'm going into another week with no adjustments or additions. Position delta at 23.17, theta 17.45 and vega 54.15.

Add $50.50 for commissions and my maximum loss is the amount I paid, or $1,440.50. This is a positive theta and positive vega position, so I benefit from the passage of time as well as increased volatility. Lately, I've been having success with butterflies which generally benefit from a decrease in volatility, but checking the implied volatility on a TOS chart, I noted that XLE was down in the lower third of the range for the last year. So since I'm not too experienced in calendar spreads, I thought I would give this one a try.
>
> Break evens for this trade are 51.91 and 56.17. My plan is to scale into this trade (add another calendar converting it into a double calendar) if the underlying moves a lot in either direction, with an ultimate goal of $1,000 profit. So, I will invest up to $5,000 into this trade to make the $1,000. With this first position, a 20% profit after commissions translates to around $332. I'm not greedy, so if XLE stays where it is and my 20% goal is reached, I'll take it. In fact, I've put in a GTC order to sell calendar at that point. If XLE moves close to break even on either side, I'll add another 20 contract calendar and adjust my profit goal up to the new cost of the trade. If that happens and XLE continues in the same direction, I'll scale back half of the original 54 calendar and add a 10 contract calendar closer to the new price. If XLE whipsaws and goes back the other way, I'll add to the 54 calendar. I will continually keep track of the cost of the trade and adjust my profit goal accordingly.

Re: [TheOptionClub.com] XLE Aug-Sep Gorilla Calendar

My bad - I meant that the *negative skew* can enhance profits of an existing calendar, and entering on a vol pop / *positive skew* can be more ideal.  I think it's more a factor of understanding the underlying, adjustments, and being able to squeeze a couple more bucks out of the trade with vols.

I only trade calendars on a single underlying I know fairly well - so I don't have a great deal of experience.  I trade the same calendar on the same underlying, month after month, for the past few years.  I don't enter based on the skew, but rather the date.  If the skew pops a few days before my entry date, I will enter the position, otherwise I just wait for the date I normally enter at.  I have found the skew enhances returns on my calendars , but isn't a dominating factor in the overall returns.  That said, if I can pick up an extra 0.10-0.20 by entering a few days early, I will.

I'm not advocating entering a calendar on IBM today, but the ATM spread has a negative skew of -2.4%, the average skew is typically not that
large.  If (assuming if) the skew returns to -1% , and all other factors remain constant, the skew alone contributes to a gain of 0.16.  I realize $16
isn't going to fund retirement, but the skew may cover commissions on some months.

Generally, I would say a negative skew is going to be a big problem, defiantly over several months

Thanks Mark. When I put the trade on, the IV of the short was 24.9% and the IV of the long was 25.9%. From what I have learned, you want that volatility skew to be between -2 and +2 unless you are specifically playing the vols due to an upcoming catalyst.

[TheOptionClub.com] Re: XLE Aug-Sep Gorilla Calendar

Ricky, I am not using delta as the primary input for adjusting or adding to the trade. If XLE begins to swing in one direction with velocity, I will buy puts or calls to flatten out the delta; perhaps reduce it by half to two thirds, depending on the circumstances. My main focus at this point in the trade is the break even points.

"new regulations" that TOS has rolled out.
Remember Children can not have margin accounts so this is treated like

Here is an Example:

Vertical BUY +10 IBM AUG 10 115 PUT

OLD BP EFFECT $80.00
NEW BP EFFECT $110,050.00

THIS IS A DEBT SPREAD!!!!!! and forget about a spread using calls...
it is not allowed.

I am not sure what I am going to do... move brokers, organize as a
business... any thoughts?

Thanks,
