I would be very interested if you could quantify the difference. In particular can you name some brokers where difference in execution is dollar-wise significant? (To the hands-on trader; I also run an ATS through the IB/TWS API, but that is a different story. Mainly that can come down to distance from the exchange.)
Commissions add up. Not only that, they are insidious. To amortize the commission cost you see instances of trade sizes in one position that might be strategically safer if distributed over several equities (the benefit of diversification). This consideration thus applies to both big and small players.

I don't want to be rude but you would be better off in spending your time trying to become a better trader rather than try to save pocket change with brokerage fees. Just my opinion but trade execution is MUCH more profitable.
