Jeff,
Your statement is not true. Short options are permitted in an IRA and
there is nothing about a short option that threatens the account's tax
sheltered status. The legal limitations concerning investments in an
IRA are very few.
Your broker may limit what you trade in your IRA. But that is their
call and has nothing to do with legality, rationality, or practicality.
I've been trading short option positions in my IRA accounts for years.
