Weird (and yes, I see the same too). Let me give you a work around. Click on one the most recent post with that subject. That will open up the message - scroll down - then you should see all the messages in the thread. Hope that helps. However, no reason why what you were doing shouldn't work.
This is exactly the reason why one should use gmail (at least to subscribe to such groups). It automatically threads all of the messages with same subject as one conversation - so if you are not interested in a topic, simply hit delete once.

Hi,
I wanted to read the whole thread about Charles Cottle and entered the
following into the search box:
Charles Cottle Presentation
What I got back was a list of only 4 messages, none of which had
"Charles Cottle Presentation" in the subject. I then tried using
Advanced Search with the same phrase, telling the search engine to find
all instances in the subject line.
This time I got NO results. Does anyone know how to structure a search,
because I'm obviously doing something wrong.
