Chris -- on the four groups I moderate, I just have new members on moderated status. If the first message they post is on topic, I give the person unmoderated status. If the first message is SPAM and they had just joined recently, they get put on "no post" status and I delete the message as SPAM.
It results in little SPAM getting through, if any. Rarely will a spammer bother to first post something "on topic" for the group.
But it's a LOT less moderation activity. Only rarely have I needed to put someone on a moderated status.

We've been down this path a few times over the last six years...
If the group is not moderated we get hammered with spam. Most days I
have to sort through the Viagra, male enhancement, stock pick
newsletter, and other spam messages to approve the legitimate messages.
It's bad enough I have to do it every day, if we didn't moderate then
you and everyone else using the board would have to sort through all of
that crap too in order to find the real posts.
