At least in my case, it's not a privacy issue, but more of not really having a finger on it.
I don't have a really separate stock portfolio, but trade out of my and my wife's IRA a/c's. I keep 25-30% in the core (FDRXX, a Fidelity money market) for financial emergencies should they arrive. So aside from that, I don't keep a separate reserve for adjustments but use the core account when needed.
